The Stiftung Experimentelle Biomedizin now accepts applications for the
Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship for Molecular Medicine


This professorship is endowed in honor of the life-time achievements of Prof. Dr. Dr. Peter Hans Hofschneider (14.02.1929 – 23.07.2004), who is respected for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of Molecular Medicine.

The Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship is devoted to young scientists working in the field of Molecular Medicine, that have exemplified in outstanding scientific achievements. It is committed to supporting these scientists and providing them with an opportunity to form their own independent research group.


Application Criteria
  • Maximum age at the time of application is 37 years.
  • Research in one of the following areas:
    – Molecular biology of cardiovascular diseases;
    – molecular hepatogastroenterology;
    – molecular dermatology
    (including virus and cancer research in these areas).
  • A minimum of two years of postdoctoral experience and successfully completed research documented by publications.
  • During the course of the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship, the applicant must be working at a university or research institution or in a hospital in Switzerland, Germany or Austria. Exempt from the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship are applicants working for non-profit organizations or institutions that prohibit their employees from immediately publishing and making accessible the results of their research.
  • During the course of the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship, the applicant must be able to commit 100% of his/her working time to the research work. Teaching commitments do not apply. Exceptions may be made in well-founded cases.

Duration of the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship
The duration of the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of prolongation for another two years. However, funding ceases upon commencement of permanent employment or acceptance of an ordinary or extra-ordinary professorship.


Included in the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship
  • Personal salary (including social security), equivalent to that of an assistant professor in the respective countries (W2 in Germany).
  • One graduate student position (including social security).
  • CHF 50,000.00 for running costs such as material and small equipment, travel expenses and publication costs.

Selection Procedure
Submission of a project sketch in English (font size 12 pt) and a list of publications (separate in original documents and reviews, without abstracts) and patents.
Such project sketch to include:
  • short curriculum vitae (one page only);
  • name of applicant and name of the institute hosting the project;
  • project title and summary of the project (a maximum of 150 words);
  • scientific background of the proposed project, including own preparatory work (a maximum of two pages); as well as
  • working plan (including methodology) and time schedule (a maximum two pages).

Review of Applications

All applications will be reviewed by the foundation advisory board and by international experts. Based on their opinion, up to six applicants will be invited to Zurich, for a lecture respectively an interview. The final decision will be made by the foundation advisory board together with the international experts and subject to approval by the foundation advisory board.

Applicants will be notified in writing within six to eight weeks as from the end of the application term and, as the case may be, invited to Zurich, for a lecture respectively an interview.

The invited applicants submit the following documents:
  • written undertaking by the institute hosting the project confirming that the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship will be established at said institute and that the necessary infrastructure for the research work will be provided for the dura­tion of the professorship (in case of medical scientists exemption from the clinical function).

Reporting
The holder of the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship is to report on the progress of his/her research work as follows:
  • First report: Upon completion of the first year of research work (a maximum of two pages).
  • Second report: Upon completion of 2-1/2 years of research work (a maximum of five pages). Based on this second report it will be decided whether to prolong the professorship for another two years.
  • Third and final report: Upon completion of the endowed professorship (a maximum of five pages).

The holder of the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship undertakes to mention in scientific publications the funding received by the Stiftung experimentelle Biomedizin and to provide the foundation with copies of the respective publications.
During the course of the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship, the holder of the professorship will be invited to lecture in Zurich at least every other year and to present to the foundation advisory board and other experts the results of his/her research work.


The holder of the Peter Hans Hofschneider Professorship is expected to make available to the general public the results of her/his research work (be that by way of public lectures or by contributing to mass media articles).
